Nicole McLaughlin is a designer that focuses on upcycling and sustainable fashion. Her work is known for its tongue-in-cheek approach, using unexpected materials to highlight the message of sustainability. Nicole also holds workshops all over the world, helping realize the possibilities of pre-existing items. She is currently developing a non-profit organization that helps connect large companies (especially those with deadstock and overstock materials) to schools and universities in need.

If you could recommend 3 books to anyone, what would they be?

Start with Why by Simon Sinek

I'm a fan of motivational books and books about money and entrepreneurship. I read this book right around the time I left my corporate job and went freelance. It was insightful, motivating, and has helped maintain that motivation.

Maison Martin Margiela by Maison Martin Margiela

I enjoy reading fashion books, and this was a great source of inspiration. It's always interesting seeing things you've never seen before. I like things that make you wonder.

I like that this book is in another language, yet I can still understand what the author conveys through precise diagrams. It's the ability to communicate without words that I gravitate to and something I try to incorporate into my work. And thanks to this book, I know a lot more about positioning lighting to optimize my space.

What are you reading now?

All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis, which is edited by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Katharine K. Wilkinson. Also, Fashionopolis (Young Readers Edition): The Secrets Behind the Clothes We Wear by Dana Thomas.

I'm always interested in learning what kids are being taught nowadays, especially from a sustainability point of view. What are people saying? What are kids reading? It's vital to understand how things are shared and the candidness in their approach. Children deserve to read the truth.

What is your favourite bookstore or library?

Books Are Magic on Smith Street in Brooklyn.

It's a magical place for books and people.
