If you could recommend 3 books to anyone, what would they be?

Drawing a Tree by Bruno Munari

Shawn: On the surface this looks like a book about drawing, but really it is about looking. The more you read the more you realize how important it is to notice the things around you. And if you look hard enough, nothing can ever be boring.

Yoshimi: One day we were stuck at home because of a typhoon. So I did a lot of the projects in this book with our kids. It was really fun. The explanations about the projects are really nice too. And the illustrations are so cute.

Saraba! by Kanako Nishi

Yoshimi: I don't think they have this book in English yet, but it is really good. It feels like it was written for people born in our generation, which is rare.

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles

Shawn: The language, the characters and their descriptions, the situations, everything about this book was perfect. It is definitely my favorite work of newer fiction.

What are you reading now?

Yoshimi: Out by Kirino Natsuo. It is about a housewife who chops up people in her bathroom for a job. It gives you chills, which is good in the summer.

Shawn: The A.B.C. Murders (Hercule Poirot #13) by Agatha Christie. I'm not a big mystery guy, but our son was reading this one. So I decided to read it too so we could talk about it.

What is your favourite bookstore or library?

Shawn: Our friend here do a really nice bookshop called "On Reading"

Yoshimi: The Nagoya City Public library. I go there every week!
